The Gift of Time

giftoftimeI didn’t really understand the value of time until recently.  For those of you who know me you might think that’s a bit daft since I work as a consultant and I get paid by the hour so in my case time = money.  I guess we all do that if we have a job that we go to on a regular basis.  We trade time for money so the value of time becomes subjective if all you do is associate time with money.  I think it’s that line of thinking that creates boundaries between people and is a very poor way of determining worth.

The reality is that time is worth more than just money.  We all have the same amount of time every day so we’re all equal there.  Where the difference comes is in what we do with our time.  A five minute phone call to a friend just to let them know you’re thinking about them can make a huge difference in the quality of their day. Every day we have the opportunity to make small chunks of time a meaningful gift to someone else.  We never know how big that impact will be.  Maybe it will just put a smile on someone’s face and the next time it could restore someone’s faith in humanity.

I used to marvel at how K.B. could do so many things in a day.  She did her work, she read at least one book each day if not more and she always found these little pockets of time to do little things like send me a text message to tell me that she loved me or write a thank you card to someone or listen to a friend or co-worker that needed to talk to someone.  Sometimes the little moments that were given made a huge difference to people but every moment given brought a smile to someone’s face.

We all have the same amount of time each day so no matter who we are we all have the same potential to make a difference.  The sad thing is that each minute that passes is another minute we can never get back and it’s a lost opportunity to make someone’s day just a bit better or potentially change someone’s life.  Of course we can’t spend every waking minute looking for ways to change the world but we can be aware that every minute we spend on a kind or thoughtful act is worth so much more that just dollars and cents and it would be a shame to waste an opportunity to make a difference.  If time was equal to money a wasted moment wouldn’t matter but time is worth so much more than money.  Every moment has the potential to be priceless.
